Do muttering thoughts rise and repine<\/a>1<\/a> <\/sup><\/a>
\nthy rod and word
\nteach patience Lord
\nAnd still<\/a> those barking thoughts of mine<\/p>\n

Am I tounge-ty’d and cannot pray2<\/a> <\/sup><\/a>
\nthy word inspires
\npraying desires
\nDumb lips unseals; tells what to say<\/p>\n

When I in darkness erre and stray
\nthy word’s a light3<\/a> <\/sup><\/a>
\nmost clear and bright
\nAnd leads me back into the way<\/p>\n

I’me foolish, simple, and want eyes<\/a>
\nthy word’s light, rule
\nmaster and Schoole,
\nWhich makes the commers to it wise<\/p>\n

I see myself undone and poor
\nthy words infold
\nA mine of gold
\nA pearl of price; all richer score4<\/a> <\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

With God by nature I’me at odds
\nthy word my soul
\nconverteth5<\/a> <\/sup><\/a> whole
\nfrom satans service unto Gods<\/p>\n

Do outward troubles, inward grief
\nmy soul torment
\nthey word is sent
\nWith comfort for my soules relief6<\/a> <\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Am I perplext with doubts and fears
\nthy word of grace
\nResolves the case<\/a>
\nAnd so my clouded judgment clears<\/p>\n

Or do despairing thoughts me take
\nthy word doth give
\nme hopes to live
\nfor Christ my dearest saviors sake<\/p>\n

Do multitudes of thoughts me presse<\/a>
\nI call to mind
\nthy word, and find
\nSuch comforts as my soul refresh<\/p>\n

Cann’t I through weakness walk alone
\nthy word Lord is
\nStrength to my knees
\nAnd staffe6<\/a> <\/sup><\/a> to stay my hand upon<\/p>\n

Thus though I thirst, faint, hunger pine
\nThy word me feeds
\nin these my needs
\nThy word it self is bread milk wine7<\/a> <\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Thus thought poor, scorn’d, forsaken pained
\nThy word alone
\nHath all in one
\nHealth, wealth, friends, honour, all contained<\/p>\n

Thus though soul-sick, and wounded sore
\nWith grievous sin
\nWhich doth begin
\nTo fester, rankling<\/a> more and more<\/p>\n

Thy word shows whence help may be had
\nAnd doth me guide
\nTo christs pierc’d side8<\/a> <\/sup><\/a>
\nWhence flows the balm of Gilead9<\/a> <\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Yea thought in me no life remain,
\nThy word is good
\nAnd living food
\nWhich fetcheth me to life again10<\/a> <\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

A Poetical meditation, wherein the unfefulling
\nexcellency, and several perfections of holy
\nScripture are briefly hinted by i.c.<\/p>\n

Thou Lord to me thy word holy given
\nprecious, and pure
\nsweet, holy, pure
\nTo guid me through the world to heaven<\/p>\n

if all wants and necesities
\nthy word\u2019s my lore
\nhopp\u2019d running o\u2019re
\nwith plenty of most rich supplies<\/p>\n

Temptations terrors dangers fears
\nthose petty hells
\nthy word dispells
\nAnd all the way before me clears<\/p>\n

When Satan flings his darts at me
\nthen Lord thy word
\nis shield and sword
\nTo save me and to make him flee<\/p>\n

The world prevents it\u2019s objects rare
\nbut yet they word
\ndoth that afford
\nWhich for deemes to me far clothier ware<\/p>\n

Then lust imuiets me to it\u2019s pleasure
\nbut to delightes
\nthy word ignuites
\nWhich for purposes in weight and measure<\/p>\n

Then errors their gum\u2019d wares display
\nbut scripture saies
\nshun errors wayes
\nWalk by my rule this is the way<\/p>\n

Thus when I\u2019me tempted unto sin
\nby thy word\u2019s art
\nhid in my heart
\nboth battle and reward i win.<\/p>\n

Yea though sins have oe\u2019ffd my soul
\nthy word can cleanse
\nthose noylome dens
\nof lust and sins left strength controul<\/p>\n

Have i an unbelieving heart
\nthy word, Lord hath
\nPower to work faith
\nBy thy most holy sprits art<\/p>\n

Have i an hard and stony heart
\nThy word thus deals,
\nFirst breaks then heales
\nThat stone is cured by this smart<\/p>\n

Would I prolong this life for ever
\nThe scripture shewes
\nWhence water flowes
\nPure streams which whoso drinks, dye\u2019s never<\/p>\n

The Lord be blest who thus provides
\nAnd filleth full
\nMy empty soul
\nWith food, which evermore abides11<\/a> <\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

Blesse God (my soul) that thus hath given
\nStrength, light, guide, way
\nLeast thou shouldst stray
\nIn this thy pilgrimage to heaven<\/p>\n

This book, these sentences, these lines,
\neach word and letter
\nto me are better
\nThen chaines of pearl, and goldenmines<\/p>\n

Tis heaven transcrib\u2019d and glory pen\u2019d
\nGod\u2019s truth no doubt
\nWas copy\u2019d out,
\nWhen he this gift to men did send<\/p>\n

Tis truth it self, God doth in tend,
\nMans word12<\/a> <\/sup><\/a> shall fall
\nHeaven, earth, and all
\nBut this shall never have an end<\/p>\n

My soul, admire that hand and quill
\nThat did produce
\nFor sinners use
\nTh\u2019 eternal mind, the soveraign<\/a> will.<\/p>\n

Adore the author too and when
\nThou canst not raise
\nSufficient praise
\nSit down and wondring say, Amen<\/p>\n
