\nChristmas Day 1658 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What! The messias born, and shall a day
\nBe thought too much expensiveness<\/a> to pay
\nTo thy memorial; shall an Anniverse
\nBe keept with ostentation to rehearse<\/a>
\nA mortal princes birth-day, or defeat
\nAn Eighty Eight1<\/a> <\/sup><\/a>, or powder plots2<\/a> <\/sup><\/a> defeat
\nA Purim3<\/a> <\/sup><\/a>; or some petty victory,
\nThoughts with the Victors loss or Infamy;
\nAnd shall we venture to exterminate,
\nAnd starve at once the memory and date
\nOf Christ incarnate, wherein such a store
\nOf Joy to mortals lay, as ne’er before
\nThe sun beheld a Treasury of Bliss;
\nThe birth-day of the world as well as his;
\nIngrateful man; It was for only thee
\nAnd for thy Restitution<\/a>, that he
\nDid stoop to wear thy raggs, chose a descent
\nBelow himself and Angels, was content
\nThus to assume thy nature, and thereby
\nHis passing Love to thee to magnifie
\nAnd canst thou thus require it, to deface
\nThis days inscription of it, or to raze<\/a>
\nThe name it bears, that future ages may
\nforget as well the blessing, as the day
\nDear Lord, when to thy Honour I design
\nTo give a Day, \u2018twas what before was thine
\nBut were it mine, I only pay a debt
